Welcome to the 28th Century.

I’m Erik Zeto. I work space salvage. Ships, stations, derelicts — anything out there in the black without an obvious owner. Sometimes I work clean, sometimes not. It pays either way, and I’m good at it.

I grew up on a colony world that believed in making its citizens hard. The type of culture that loves compulsory service and unquestioning duty. Combat training, naturally — hand-to-hand, weapons, conflict psych — an upbringing that taught me to break things… and people.

I got exiled. The details don’t matter. I left, and I’ve been shipping around the galaxy ever since.

I hop from crew to crew, system to system. It’s a rootless life and it suits me just fine. No ties and no expectations beyond the job at hand. I’ve got a reputation as someone who gets shit done. When I have to, I troubleshoot. That means finding trouble and… you get the idea.

Years ago, I spent time in the cyberworlds. I went in baseline organic and came out augmented. I’ve got in-built tech, bio and nano upgrades that people in typical human cultures shudder at. Maybe I’ll let you in on the details — when I know you better.

For now, I’ll just say that direct mind-to-mind contact with AIs taught me things about machine consciousness that would make your brain flip.

What all that means in practical terms? I can read situations other people miss. Human behaviour, machine logic, and the cultural gaps in between: I’ve got a nose for it. And with my network of contacts all over the galaxy — some of whom you wouldn’t want to surprise in a gloomy backstreet — there’s no data in human space I can’t dig up. Sometimes I get paid to do just that.

So that’s me, Erik Zeto. Salvage operator, investigator, and an augment with no ambitions beyond the next contract. I’ve seen… things out there. I’ve got some stories for sure.

Maybe you want to hear some?
